This blog reviews surf spots around the world for beginner/intermediate surfers and digital nomads. I try to stay in each area for at least a whole lunar cycle (approximately one month) to get a sense of how the breaks change with different tides (spring tide, neap tide, and everything in between). I cover the quality of the waves for that time of year (such as crowding, mushiness, accessibility, etc.) as well as food, lodging, transportation, and suitability for remote working or extended stays.
I started surfing in 2008 and longboarded on and off for some years in California then went on hiatus to explore other hobbies, like parkour and flying trapeze. I returned to surfing after the pandemic but this time I wanted to learn shortboarding because I felt it fit my energy better. If longboarding is ballet*, then shortboarding is hip hop. I'm definitely more of a hip hop girl. I much prefer the fast, twitchy, throw-my-weight-around type of surfing but hope to round it out with some of the grace and elegance of longboarding.
*My mom sent me to ballet school to correct my posture but I struggled with how slow and soporific it was. The teacher acted like there was a stick up her bum, which reflected in her style of ballet. Also, the tutus were itchy and my stockings kept falling down. My mother, bless her heart, would have needed to get me stoned to fit the dainty little image she had envisioned for me.
